The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The medal is named in honor of the 19th century English illustrator, Randolph Caldecott, and is presented annually by the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The winner is displayed first and the Honor books follow.
Established in 1969, this award commemorates the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors Mrs. King "for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood." It is presented annually boy the American Library Association, to an African American author and illustrator whose works "encourage and promote world unity and peace, and serve as an inspiration to young people in the achievement of their goals."
